“The Guitar Music of Karl Korte”
August 9, 2010
The music contained on “The Guitar Music of Karl Korte” was all composed for Duo46. The trio, Evocations and the Two Makams were commissioned works while Virtual Voices was composed and dedicated to the duo “with sincere appreciation for their continuing support, encouragement, and performance of music by living composers.”
Evocations, a trio (Duo46 plus cello), was premiered on the island of Cyprus in 2004, where the duo were then in residence at Eastern Mediterranean University. The work is intended to “evoke” impressions of places where the composer has either visited or would like to visit, including New Zealand (Te Maori), Japan (Aki) and Cyprus.
Two Makams (I: slow, II: fast) drawn from Turkish music where shifting asymmetric time signatures such as 5/8, 7/8, 10/8, are used extensively, in contrast to Western music with its preference for symmetric 4/4, 6/8 or consistent 3/4 time.
Virtual Voices, uses a prerecorded digital track with which the violin and the guitar exchange roles - at times companionate - at times, confrontation- al. Without exception, all of the sounds on the digital track were created from sampled acoustic sounds of the violin and the guitar. Almost a hundred samples are involved and, although in many cases, the samples are used quite literally, the digital manipulation of others obscures their origins.
